Dairy Development Department established in 1962 targeting the overall development in the dairy sector of Kerala state. The Dairy Development Department is undertaking different programs aiming at increasing and self sufficiency in milk production by which social and economical development of dairy farmers. Remarkable developments in the dairy sector were achieved after the formation of the department. Milk production though Dairy Co-operative Societies (DCS) has been increased to 64 lakh Ltr/day in 2018-19 from 2 lakh litre on the formation of this Department. Department has almost succeeded in attaining the difficult task of self sufficiency in milk production in the state. The dairy farmers in the state are provided the higher milk price when compared to other state. Department implements high quality plan schemes for the enhancement of dairy farmers. Kerala is the only state which provide pension to dairy farmers.
State Govt, through the department initiate creative steps to ensure the quality of milk and milk products both at farmer and DCS level. The comprehensive insurance scheme implemented for Dairy farmers and cattle is a huge relief to the farmers.

Aims

• To enable social and economical development of dairy farmers through co operative sector.
• To take a lead role in making the state self sufficient in milk production.
• Providing inputs to the farmers to increase profit by reducing the cost of products though scientific management practices.
• Ensure fodder cultivation and mechanisation.
• To develop the activities of the department and DCS by the efficient usage of information technology.
• Ensure fair price for the milk producers and quality milk food for the general public.
• Ensure the quality of milk coming from other states.
• Ensure the quality of milk, milk products cattle feed, water using modern laboratory facilities and these protect public health.
• Encourage dairy farmers for the purchase of cattle to set up of mini dairy units, modernisation of dairy farmer though milk shed development programme. .
• Import scientific knowledge in cattle rearing, manufacture of milk products, and co- operation to young generation and prepare them for modern dairying though dairy training centres.
• Ensure more employment possibilities and increase income using the opportunities of value added production of milk products.
• Ensure the social safety of dairy farmers through comprehensive insurance programmes and ensure welfare activities through Kerala Dairy Farmers Welfare Fund(KDFWF).
• Registration of New DCS, super vision, inspection election to the board, arbitration etc. related to dairy co co-operative societies are the main activities of the Department.

In Malappuram District, there are 15 Dairy extension service units, one quality control unit are functioning under the office of the Deputy Director of Dairy Department. Dairy Extension activities are carried out through the Dairy Extension service units and provide assistance to the dairy farmers. A quality control lab and mobile quality control lab are functioning to ensure the quality of milk and milk products. Activities regarding the welfare of the dairy farmers are also co-ordinated in the District.

There are 282 Dairy Co-operative Societies registered in Malappuram District and 247 are functioning now, of which 237 societies are APCOS (Anand Pattern Co-operative Society) types and 10 societies are traditional types. Societies collect and distribute 80000Ltr/day. Around 5000 male members and 4000 female members are pouring milk in the societies, Apart from this around 15000 dairy farmers are also working in this sector. Nilambur block stands in front in milk production. 44 societies are functioning in Nilambur Block. Paral society of Perinthalmanna Block transacts highest milk quantity in the District. Department delivers all the activities for the comprehensive development of dairy farmers of the District.
