Our mission

  1. To serve as a district-level referral center for veterinary services
  2. Conduct treatment and immunization of birds, animals in the area of jurisdiction of the institution.
  3. Implement knowledge extension activities in a timely manner
  4. Implementing projects directly and in tripartite panchayaths by the department in a transparent and timely manner.

  1. Acquire treatment of birds, animals.
  2. Carry out animal welfare activities under the purview of this institution.
  3. Effective implementation of control measures against contagious diseases in the district.
  4. Effectively implement immunization programs for cattle subject to government regulations.
  5. Provision of artificial insemination facilities under the direction of Government for breeding of cow, buffalo and goats and to improve the quality.
  6. perform the necessary surgery for the animals.
  7. Each shift will display the name information of the doctors on duty.
  8. Effectively run the Clinical Laboratory with this institution. Examine samples taken from other veterinary clinics in the district and give results.
  9. Organize camp dispensaries where necessary.
  10. Provide facilities to insure livestock and birds.
  11. Help farmers to get insurance benefits in a timely manner.
  12. Collaborate with other institutions and organizations for the control of animal diseases.
  13. Actively organize knowledge dissemination activities.

(Every day from 9am to 10pm, the Livestock Inspector visits the farmer’s houses and checks the numbers of cattle, milk, produce, calves, etc.)

Our duty

  1. Provision of artificial insemination facilities for cows and buffaloes.
  2. Write and display the details of semen samples available in the center.
  3. Pregnancy testing after three months of artificial insemination pellets.
  4. Refer to the nearest veterinary hospital or veterinary dispensary for treatment of those non pregnant animals, even after 3 consecutive AIs.
  5. For reference, refer the matter to the nearest Veterinary Hospital or Veterinary Dispensary for treatment.
  6. Distribute medicines to farmers to the farmers.
  7. Take steps to expand the cultivation of grass.
  8. Assist the Veterinary Surgeon in the implementation of panchayaths level animal welfare programs.
  9. Conducting knowledge-based activities / farmers discussion classes.

Schemes operated by the Department of Animal Husbandry

Animal husbandry is an integral part of the rural economy and the livelihood of the rural population. The demand for animal products such as milk, eggs and meat is increasing daily. Animal welfare has shifted from being an agriculture-related sector to an independent agricultural clean-up. Established in 1956, the Department of Animal Husbandry in the state coordinates animal husbandry activities. The department is responsible for animal health care, disease control, marketing of products, biological manufacturing and farmer training programs. This sector contributes about 10% of the state’s GDP. The department, which utilizes advanced data collection systems such as INAPH and GEO TAGGING, has gained national attention in farmer welfare projects.

In Malappuram district, 90% of the population is a Non vegetarian. The gap between the demand and availability of meat and poultry points to the potential of the sector. It is interesting to note that a large number of new entrepreneurs have emerged in the district. The Department of Animal Husbandry in the district is in the process of coordinating with the local self government institutions to develop traditional farming practices, adopt new technologies into operational areas, utilize the potential of bird production and marketing and research and development programs for farmers. The last ten years have seen significant advances in the field of planning and implementation. Increasing domestic production is the approach of equipping farmers to produce, supply and store with proper direction and assistance.

School Poultry Club

94 (Government / Aided / UP / High Schools) schools were selected for this project. Five chicks between the ages of 46 to 60 are distributed to 50 students selected from a school at the rate of one pupil. The project is aimed at increasing egg production and increasing animal welfare in children with increasing demand. The nodal officer of the scheme is Veterinary Surgeon / Senior Veterinary Surgeon of selected Panchayats.

Establishment of Duck Breeding Centers

The project aims to provide ten ducklings from the age of 51 to 60 days to 200 selected duck farmers in the district. Farmers with an interest in duck farming and the right place to grow them have been selected for this project. The project is aimed at improving duck farming in the state, generating adequate duck eggs and meat and thus increasing income. The nodal officer of the scheme is the Veterinary Surgeon / Senior Veterinary Surgeon of the respective Panchayat

Scheme for raising poultry in urban areas

A total of 50 units, including 10 quality chicks, were selected from Malappuram Municipality for the year 2019-20. The scheme provides automatic cages for drinking, feeding and egg collection. The project aims to improve poultry farming in urban areas where there is very little space available. The nodal officer of the scheme is the Veterinary Surgeon / Senior Veterinary Surgeon of the respective Panchayat.

Modernization of Mini Dairy Unit and financing of purchase of milking machines

The scheme will include ten farmers who are raising five or more cows from dairy farmers in the district. This system can emphasize clean and fast milk production and health of cows.

Training in commercial goat farming

Under this program, the focus is on scientifically commercializing goat farming through a four day training program for selected farmers. The training program was conducted under the supervision of APO, RAHC Athavanad.

Taluk level Entrepreneurship Meet

The project will be implemented in two locations: to introduce innovative technologies to farmers in the district and how to make the sector commercially viable through scientific management.

Block Level Knowledge Development Program

In financial year 2019-20, there are 14 block level knowledge dissemination programs in the district. Farmers on such programs will be able to focus and simplify the different areas in the region. A total sum of Rs. 98,000 / – is used for this purpose.

Service of overnight veterinary surgeons

Veterinary Surgeons have been appointed on contract basis in Kondotty, Nilambur, Perinthalmanna, Ponnani, Malappuram, Tirur and Wandur blocks in Malappuram district to provide services to farmers from 6 pm to 6 am. This has resulted in the farmers’ livestock issues during ackward timings is being resolved quickly.

Conversion of Bio waste to Manure Unit

The scheme includes farmers who raise more than two cows, those who are below the poverty line and those who have high producing dairy cows. In Malappuram district, 135 such units will be operational this fiscal.

Establishment of Animal Welfare Clubs in Schools

Scheme for encouraging school children to love animals and to care for them in a financial way. In this financial year 2019-20, 3 schools were selected.

Hospital Development Committee

The project aims to set up a development committee under each institution, and three such development committees to co-ordinate and strengthen animal welfare activities in the respective panchayaths.

Monthly Technology Advice ( MTA )

The bi-monthly newsletter provides farmers with insights from various sectors, disease control, sales and production, and experimental observations.

Goat Satellite Unit

120 units consisting of four does and one buck each will be distributed in Malappuram district for the financial year 2019-20. It is meant for the breeding and protection of the Malabari goats, a native of the Malappuram district.

Infertility Camps

25 camps are being organized in various panchayaths , wherein more infertile cases milk areas of Malappuram district. Under this scheme, a number of dairy farmers received expert testing and treatment of infertility problems in their pellets.

Empowerment of Veterinary Institutions

Funding for modernization of various veterinary hospitals in the district as per their requirement and modernization of labs and operation theaters.

Special Livestock Breeding Programme

Under this scheme 10414 calves selected during previous years are provided with feed on subsidy rate. In addition to this, during the current financial year, the project will include 984 calves under the specialGovardhani scheme, 1488 under Govardhani Scheme& 409 under CAP Scheme, with a 50 per cent share by panchayath , 268 calves of 4-6 months old hybrid cow calves being provided with feed at subsidized rate and scientific care.

Cattle Insurance (Gosamurthy Plus – 1 year, 3 years)

The scheme provides benefits for livestock deaths and natural disasters and Permanent Total Disability (PTD). Those registered farmers with healthy cows can avail this scheme. Under this scheme, the government contributes 50% of the premium to the general public and 70% of the premium to SC / ST categories. The scheme will include crossbred cows between the ages of 2 to 7 years and milk yield of at least 7 liters per day up to a maximum of Rs. 50,000 / -can be insured. In Malappuram district, 2325 cows in the general category and 127 cows in the SC / ST category were insured. During this financial year , NLM Plus scheme will cover the insurance of Livestock and farmers.

Foot & Mouth Disease Management Program

A vaccination program for cow, buffalo and pig.vaccination is carried out twice a year.
