|General information||As on 31-3-95, there are 5918 small industrial units with permanent registration. One of them 2040 units are agro-based. These units have a total investment of about Rs.92 crores and they provide employment directly to 33500 people. Average investment per unit Rs. 1.55 lakhs. There are about 500 women’s industrial units and 230 schedule caste ventures. About Rs. 1 crore is spent annually for various industrial promotion schemes like investment subsidy, interest subsidy, self-employment assistance, etc. in the district. There are 16 large and medium industries in the district which provide direct employment to 4500 people. These units have a total capital investment of Rs. 42 crores . Among the big undertakings, 3 are spinning mills. There are 2 wood based, 6 chemical and 5 engineering units. A co-operative Spinning mill (25000 Spindles) and a unit of KELL near Kuttippuram are worth mentioning among the several proposed large scale industrial units. Preliminary steps for establishing an industrial Growth Centre in 250 acres up near Calicut University. A rubber based common facility centre and industrial estate established at Payyanad at a cost of Rs. 1 crore is fast growing. The estate is in an area of 15.03 acres, in which 31 plots have been given to enterpreneurs for rubber based units. Under the new industrial policy of the state government, a Green Channel Counter, functions at the District Industries Centre. Besides the Dist. Industries Centre at Malappuram, 4 taluks industries offices and 14 block extension offices are functioning.|

There are four Taluk Industries Officer in Ernad (Manjeri), Tirur, Perinthalmanna and Ponnani. Each of them has an Assistant District Industries Officer as controlling Officer.
Each Block and Municipality has an Industries Extension Officer for the industries development activities in blocks and muncipalities.
The department is the focal point of industrial development in the district. It provides assistance for enterpruneal development training programmes, S.S.I registrations. Assistance for getting various licences. Assistance for preparing industrial project reports, allotment of lands in Industrial Centres and development plots, sanction of Margin Money loans, sales tax exemption, investment subsidy, employment assistance through PMRY scheme etc.
As on 31st March 2001 there are 11334 small scale industrial inits. During 2000-2001 PMRY assistance was provided to 850 persons
